The average number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system stands at 1,683,092 in April. The increase in the number of foreign contributors stands at 40,027, representing a rise of 2.44%. This increase, together with that posted in April 2015, represent the best figures for April in the last decade.

Compared with last year, the number of foreign workers rose by 4.68%, in other words, 75,209 more people in work than in 2015, the largest increase in this month since 2008.

The highest figures for foreign workers contributing to the Social Security system correspond to Romania (305,535), Morocco (211,077), China (93,810), Italy (79,113) and Ecuador (67,929). These countries are followed by the United Kingdom (59,942), Bulgaria (55,669), Bolivia (53,260) and Colombia (51,390).

Autonomous regions

In month-on-month terms, the number of foreign National Insurance contributors rose in all autonomous regions except the Canary Islands (down 0.26%). In year-on-year terms, the number of foreign National Insurance contributors rose in all autonomous regions.

The figures posted for April show that 974,803 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 708,289 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,408,690 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (210,415) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (200,212). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (269,823), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,344) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (234).

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in April, 915,772 are men and 767,320 are women.
