The signing of these loan contracts took place at the Ministry of Public Works and was also attended by the Vice-President of the EIB, Román Escolano, the Chairman of ADIF-Alta Velocidad, Gonzalo Ferre, and the Chairman of Puertos del Estado, José Llorca.

ADIF agreement

The loan for 180 million euros was granted to ADIF-Alta Velocidad to finance safety, signalling and telecommunications installations, as well as to implement ERTMS, on several railway lines.

The goal is to equip these lines with installations that provide the best possible safety standards, reliability and capacity. In total, ERTMS - the safety system developed following an initiative by the European Union to guarantee interoperability between national railway networks - will be implemented on over 810 kilometres of track.

The loan includes a repayment period of 20 years and a grace period of five years. The first provision is for an amount of 100 million euros.

The installation of control-command and trackside signalling systems, especially ERTMS, will be carried out on the following high-performance and suburban railway lines:

  • - Valladolid-Venta de Baños-Burgos Line
  • - Vigo-A Coruña Line
  • - Seville-Cadiz Line
  • - Various lines of the suburban railway network in Madrid
  • - Various lines of the suburban railway network in Barcelona

Investments in port infrastructure

In turn, the loan for 50 million euros to Puertos del Estado will mainly be aimed at improving interoperability between modes of transport and improving port efficiency.

Under the 2015 Company Plans, Puertos del Estado selected a series of port authorities with investments that could be financed by the EIB. The proposed financing will initially be received by the Port Authorities of Avilés, Castellón, Melilla, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Vigo, with other port authorities possibly being added in the future.
