Following a one-year pilot programme, Renfe and Iberia launched the combined high speed train-plane ticket that connects the international network of the Iberia Group and various national Renfe destinations, simplifies the purchase process and the issue of travel documents, and improves the customer experience before, during and after their trip. The new combined ticket is a step forward in the policy of boosting intermodality being implemented by the Ministry of Public Works.

For Luis Gallego, Executive Chairman of Iberia, "this is a new phase in our goal of offering our customers new travel alternatives and connecting Iberia's international network in a convenient and straight-forward manner with the best possible customer care throughout their trip".

Pablo Vázquez, Chairman of Renfe Operadora, considers that "this agreement represents an important step in our commercialisation strategy, through which we seek to win train customers in new market segments based on intermodality, integrating different means of transport under a single ticket".

As from Thursday, more than 80 Iberia international destinations can be connected through a single ticket and a shared code in Europe, America, Africa and the Near East, with Cordoba, Malaga, Seville, Valladolid and Zaragoza.

These tickets can be purchased in a straight-forward and one-stop process either through the websites of Iberia or Renfe, or through travel agencies throughout the world and Serviberia. To achieve this, the two companies have carried out major technological updates and, furthermore, Renfe has obtained an IATA operator code that allows it to combine train plus plane trips in a shared code.

Moreover, boarding cards can also be obtained through either the Iberia or Renfe websites in a single process, which simplifies paperwork for customers.

The commuter train ticket to connect Atocha and Chamartin stations with Terminal 4 of the airport in Madrid is also included in the final ticket price.

In order to improve customer mobility at railway stations and at the airport, a new signalling system has been incorporated that includes information screens for scheduled plane and train departures. Moreover, in the event of incidents, such as delays or the cancellation of either means of transport, since all the stretches of the journey have been issued under a single ticket, customers are afforded every form of protection in the same way as for connecting flights. In addition, post-sales customer care is offered indistinctly at any of the offices of either company.

Tickets can be bought up to a year in advance. Boarding cards will become available within 24 hours of the planned trip.
Under this new phase of intermodal development, progress is made in offering more integrated and convenient products for those passengers that use high-speed trains to reach Madrid and then travel on with Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum to any of their international destinations.
