This Resolution, unanimously adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, constitutes a major boost to international efforts in the fight against terrorism - especially in the Middle East - by introducing new measures in the fight against a number of terrorist groups that are seriously threatening security in the region.

In the Resolution, the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security categorically condemns the violence unleashed by these and other terrorist groups, which are involved in massacres, the persecution of minorities, summary executions, large-scale human rights violations and, in short, the causing of indescribable suffering for the population of the territories where they are active. The UNSC calls for an end to the violence and the immediate dissolution of these terrorist groups, and warns of the consequences for those responsible for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity under international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, the UNSC stresses that terrorism can only be beaten through active participation and collaboration from States and international organisations, and asks all parties to meet their obligations in the fight against terrorism regarding such issues as the prevention and repression of acts to finance and recruit combatants outside of Iraq and Syria, regarding which it urges the pertinent measures to be established and strengthened.

Spain joins this international outcry against the senselessness of such terrorism, which is jeopardising so many innocent lives in the region and around the world, and also threatening the coexistence of the various communities in the Middle East. Spain will continue to cooperate with the United Nations and its partners with a view to definitively eradicating the scourge of terrorism.
