This is an extremely important UN directorate, since it decides on the major international agreements relating to culture, in areas such as cultural heritage, in which Spain plays a leading role.

This appointment is in recognition of the great prestige and suitability of the candidate, who has an extensive track-record in the field of culture and the defence of heritage, as well as the status of Spain as a major cultural power and the commitment of our country to UNESCO at a crucial time for the organisation.
