Cabinet from December 2011 to April 2014

Pool MoncloaMariano Rajoy becomes the sixth President off the Government of Spain since the approval of the Constitution in 1978, after his victory in the general elections on 20 November 2011. The Lower House of Parliament officially ratifies his appointment on 20 December 2011.

His appointment is published in the Official State Gazette (Spanish acronym: BOE) on 21 December. On the same day, the new President of the Government is officially sworn in before the King at Zarzuela Palace and, following his arrival at Moncloa Palace, he announces the composition of his government.

On 22 December, the Royal Decree is published in the Official State Gazette containing the appointment of the Vice-President of the Government (with special responsibilities as Government Spokesperson) and the Royal Decree with the appointment of the new cabinet ministers.

Mariano Rajoy attends the official swearing in of the members of his government before the King and, on the following day, presides over his first Council of Ministers, with the following composition:

  • President of the Government: Mariano Rajoy Brey
  • Vice-President of the Government and Minister for the Presidency: María Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría Antón
  • Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation: José Manuel García-Margallo y Marfil
  • Minister for Justice: Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón Jiménez.
  • Minister for Defence: Pedro Morenés Eulate
  • Minister for the Treasury and Public Administration Services: Cristóbal Montoro Romero
  • Minister for Home Affairs: Jorge Fernández Díaz

Cabinet from April 2014 to dateOn 28 April 2014, Mariano Rajoy announces the first cabinet reshuffle of the 10th Legislature, affecting the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Affairs.

The Royal Decree with the appointment of the new minister is published in the Official State Gazette on the same day and she is officially sworn in before the King at Zarzuela Palace.

The following day, on 29 April, she takes over from her predecessor at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Affairs.
The cabinet thus has the following composition:
  • President of the Government: Mariano Rajoy Brey
  • Vice-President of the Government and Minister for the Presidency: María Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría Antón

Cabinet from September to December 2014

Pool MoncloaThe second cabinet reshuffle of the legislature takes place on 29 September 2014. The Official State Gazette (Spanish acronym: BOE) publishes the Royal Decree appointing Rafael Catalá Polo as the new Minister for Justice, replacing Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, who had resigned on 23 September.

The new minister was sworn in before the King on 29 September at Zarzuela Palace and was handed over his portfolio from his predecessor at Parcent Palace.

During the period from 24 to 29 September, by means of Royal Decree, the Vice-President of the Government and Minister for the Presidency, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, took on the ordinary duties of the Minister for Justice.

Following the reshuffle, the composition of the cabinet is as follows:

Alfonso Alonso AraneguiCasa RealOn 2 December 2014, the President of the Government announced the appointment of Alfonso Alonso Aranegui as Minister for Health, Social Services and Equality to replace Ana Mato, who had presented her resignation on 26 November.

The Official State Gazette (Spanish acronym: BOE) published a Royal Decree on 3 December containing the appointment of Alfonso Alonso, who was sworn into office before the King on the same day at Zarzuela Palace. Subsequently, the portfolio was handed over to him by his predecessor at the department headquarters.

Following the reshuffle, the composition of the cabinet is as follows:

Pool EFEOn 25 June 2015, the President of the Government announced the fourth reshuffle of the legislature, with the appointment of Íñigo Méndez de Vigo y Montojo as Minister for Education, Culture and Sport, replacing José Ignacio Wert.

The Official State Gazette (Spanish acronym: BOE) published a Royal Decree the following day announcing the appointment of Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, who was sworn into office before the King at Zarzuela Palace.

Subsequently, the new minister was handed over his predecessor's portfolio at the headquarters of his ministerial department.

The Cabinet was thus comprised of the following members:
