The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, sent the following telegram to the President of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of the Arab Republic of Egypt following the events that took place at a football match in Port Said.

"Mr. President,

Deeply moved by the tragic events that took place at the football match between the teams of Al Masry and Al Ahly in the city of Port Said, which resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and many injuries, I would like to express our sincerest condolences on behalf of myself and the Government of Spain.

In these times of pain, Mr. President, you can rest assured that you can rely on the solidarity and thoughts of the Spanish people, who feel very close to the people of Egypt due to the strong bonds of friendship that unite our two nations.

Please accept my warmest regards and deepest personal respect.

Mariano Rajoy Brey
